Just Joe (Harlequin More Than Words) - Carla Cassidy

Yep, another one. I want these stories read, reviewed, and deleted so that I can make room for more books on my NOOK before I lose the internet amidst last-minute packing.

However, this little gem is staying...maybe I will archive it and but its a keeper. Great reading can come in small packages (this story tops out at 81 NOOK pages, including two letters to readers, a biography on Helen McGovern, and copyright, oh...and the story itself). As usual, no star ratings due to the nature of the work being based on a real-life charity.

First, here is a run-down on the charity this book was written to highlight:

Helen McGovern runs the Emergency Food Network, a charity dedicated to providing fresh fruits and vegetables to shelters, food banks, and individuals on public assistance. This charity is based in Tacoma, WA but the story takes place in Kansas City. McGovern is a retired commercial realtor (hence, the hero's job) and now is executive director for EFN. EFN was started in the 1980s during the recession to help supply food banks with fresh food. For more information, click  http://www.efoodnet.org/.

The author, Carla Cassidy, is a new-to-me author that I will be reading more of in the future. Her characters were well drawn and angsty, but the pay off at the end is a killer of the best kind. I finished reading this story in the bath tub and cried -- haven't done that in a long time. Possible Trigger Warning: hero's issues stem from his young son's death.

I usually hate (HATE) the Big Misunderstanding trope, but the author keeps it short and realistic. Again, as in all the other MTW books, there is a few formatting and typo issues, but nothing to bring you out of the story. I think Harlequin needs some copy editors to go over their ebooks.

I highly recommend this short story!
