David Philipps is a journalist from the Fort Carson area and works for the local paper. This book was an outgrowth of his articles detailing the rise of crime during the Iraq war starting in 2003. A big percentage of the local crime rate came from one unit, the famed Band of Brothers (506th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division). Between the less than happy childhoods of the OIF soldiers, their time in Iraq, their possible PTSD and TBI injuries, overall mental health and possible undiagnosed illness, abuse of prescribed drugs in a combat zone and at home, and general life in the military were reasons given for them committing crimes. Science, psychologists, military officials - Philipps talked with everyone to find reasons for the crimes but also hopeful treatments, better processes for identifying individuals, and a better understanding from civilians about what happens to military members when they go to war and when they come home. A recommended read.
